General orders no. 48, 1864 Sept. 14.

General order of Major General E.R.S. Canby, issued by C.T. Christensen, assistant adjutant general, from the headquarters of the Military Division of West Mississippi in New Orleans, La. Announcing that the exchange of prisoners between Confederate and Union armies has been suspended, the order stipulates that Confederate prisoners will now be transferred to depots in the North, accompanied by guards commanded by commissioned officers. The order also describes methods for documenting transfers of detachments of prisoners.

Canby was born in Piatt's Landing, Kentucky, to Israel T. and Elizabeth (Piatt) Canby. He attended Wabash College, but transferred to the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1839. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served as the regimental adjutant. Christian Thomsen Christensen, a Danish born American businessman, soldier, and philanthropist. In 1861 he joined the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers and in November 1861 was commissioned Captain of Co. I. In Sept. 1863 he was transferred to the service in the War Department under General Canby and in May 1864, became assistant Adjutant General of the Military Division of West Mississippi.
